Our bodies have a knack for reacting to something foreign. When our lungs come in contact with something that it hasn’t come in contact with before, for example, our immune system goes to work. It overreacts, though, and it is what we know as an allergic reaction. As human beings, we tend to put pieces of the puzzle together. We develop routines and get used to a certain pattern. Such is the case in the workplace. We get used to a fixed number of things to do at work. When something changes at work, such as an increase in workload, our bodies sees that as something “foreign” and reacts in the form of the fight or flight response.
This stress reaction is actually a healthy one. Since you may have been caught off guard with the increased workload, you may have been thinking “I’m screwed” at the back of your mind. Your body reacts in such a way that you can do all of those things. The stress response, however, is supposed to be a last resort strategy for you to overcome the situation you are facing. If that will be your workload until further notice, then it’s up to you to be able to adapt in due time. If your subconscious rejects the idea, your body continues releasing the adrenalin you need for each day you are dealing with that situation.
With adrenalin, you are pumped up. When the adrenalin wears off, you feel what you should have felt a while ago: exhaustion. When you are drunk with adrenalin, you don’t feel anything while doing your work. Underneath that natural high, your body is exerting too much effort that it’s starting to break. After your body’s stress response, you feel these “side effects”. Included are headaches, loss of concentration, loss of appetite, difficulty in sleeping, and fatigue. Stomach cramps, chest pains and other physical symptoms are a result of your body overworking itself.
Stress is a natural bodily reaction that when keeps being triggered, can cause a lot of damage. For one, stress is a major cause of employees leaving the company they work for. It can be due to the stressful environment, the stressful work, or the stressful boss. One particular problem that stress seemed to cause in women was infertility. The stress hormones affected the sex hormones in some way. These same women claim to have only gotten pregnant after leaving their stressful jobs.
Stress symptoms may appear mild at first. But these can quickly develop into other more serious complications. There is evidence that links stress with cardiovascular diseases. Stress, due to staying in the fight or flight reaction for too long, can lead to anxiety disorders. In stress management, the first step is to identify what causes you great distress. This means learning to recognize the symptoms when they appear. Don’t let these symptoms get out of hand.
