The stress response is a bodily reaction that occurs when we encounter something new. The “new” encounter can is often initially perceived as a threat, as we don’t know what’s going to happen next. For instance, we get anxious over the thought of whether or not we can finish everything our boss told us to do. After that first encounter, we as humans adapt. When we encounter that same situation, we no longer go into the fight or flight mode as we already known what to do. There are, of course exceptions, as some of us may not be able to adapt. This may also be the symptom of stress in teens.

For teenagers, everything is a new thing. This brings about both types of stress as defined by Hans Selye: good stress, or eustress and bad stress or distress. For teens, the thought of being independent while being dependent can be exciting; trying out new things on their own, thereby eustress.
Most times, what they face in school can lead to bad stress. Teenagers, students, are exposed to more stressors than adults are. For the first time, teenagers know what it’s like to belong to a group, but can be subject to peer pressure. Teenagers may know what it’s like to be in a relationship, but may undergo the stress of a break up. The symptoms of stress in teenagers may vary. Since these are the times where they would be very emotional, most signs of stress would be displayed in the teenager’s emotions and actions. This does not mean they are exempted from the usual symptoms including, but not limited to, headaches, chest pains, and stomach cramps. The teenager is more likely to show changes in behavior. For instance, they may often say that they’re not hungry. This can either mean the stress has made the teenager lose his or her appetite; or the pressure of peers have made him or her self-conscious enough to lose some weight. Either way, it’s stress.

When the teenage student stays up all night due to being pressured too much by the parents to study, the stress can lead him or her to develop sleeping problems or even insomnia. Being belittled at school AND at home can lead the teenager to the path of depression. The teenage years are also those full of angst. These are the years where they will feel like their parents never understand them or what they want. When the teenager shows signs of anger management issues, irritability, or aggression, it may be due to the pressures at home and school. Stress is a good, natural reaction to new things. When a teenager isn’t able to cope up with these new things, they can lose self-esteem, self-confidence, and other values necessary for them to be able to emotionally mature. Statistics show that there is an increasing number of teenagers that are seriously contemplating about suicide, and those who actually tried it. This is what stress can do. If you’re a parent, try to look out for any signs of stress in your teen.
