Stress is what happens when we face certain circumstances that we could not cope up with. The effects that we feel include, but are not limited to, irritability, sleep disturbance, loss of appetite, loss of focus, and burnout. Stress is a major cause of employees leaving their companies, and it’s not surprising while they do so. When one is put under constant stress, they risk developing more serious mental and physical health problems. Heart disease is being connected with stress, for instance. So is infertility.

When we are asked to deal with something that we know we are not capable of, our bodies help us cope by increasing our heart rate and releasing adrenalin – making us capable of something that we normally can’t. The problem with stress only arises if we are repeatedly finding ourselves in the same stressful situation. Our bodies have limits, and by helping us again and again, they’re bound to break. To relieve stress, we usually turn to relaxation. Some people, mostly women, would get a massage to relax. Others turn to yoga.

Yoga encompasses a wide variety of relaxation techniques. While these techniques are meant to be more of a spiritual experience, it has been adapted in the western countries as a form of exercise. If you’ve heard about proper breathing, correct breathing, or breathing exercises, you’re looking at the source. Through breathing techniques, one can achieve a state of relaxation. If you have heard of deep breathing, which is a stress relief technique in itself, then you can think of the yoga breathing exercises to be an advanced form of it.

Yoga is also associated with meditation. Meditation is most commonly performed with relaxing music. The music is commonly referred to as New Age, which helps the yogi achieve that trance state needed for meditating. Music does not need to be New Age when meditating, nor does it need to be used only for meditation. Since yoga is composed of exercises and postures, other types of music are used as well. The most commonly used genre is classical music.

Yoga is considered an exercise in the western world. Yet, it is unlike the rigorous exercises that we do. They are more associated with relaxation than with activity. This does not mean that you should give up exercising and do yoga instead. Exercising has its own benefits with regards to stress, and yoga has its benefits with regards to stress. Do both if you have the time and a stress free life can easily be yours.
