There are two types of stress. There is good stress, also called eustress by psychologists; and there is bad stress, also called distress. Stress is neither good nor bad to begin with. We humans, each unique in our own little ways, react differently to stress. Our reactions convert stress into either eustress or distress. When we react positively to stress, it becomes eustress. When we react negatively to it, it becomes distress. Stress is like a horror movie. Some people enjoy a good scare, while others have recurring nightmares about it.
The most common place where we experience stress is the workplace. When we happily think that we can take the workload given to us, it helps us perform above par. When we think that we can’t do it but we take the workload, we panic and get exhausted physically and mentally at the end of the workday. The workplace isn’t the only place where we experience stress, though. We encounter stress everywhere we go. For students, their school experience can become eustress or distress depending on how they react to the stress.
Some of the most common circumstances that students face in their school are the same as what adults may face in the workplace. For one, students worry about their academic records. There is nothing more stressful for a student than studying four to five subjects a few days before the exam. Besides academics, school life is also where relationships blossom and the emotions attached to these relationships can be a stressful factor. Humans are social beings, and students usually give in to peer pressure. For some students, going home is more stressful than being at school. Some parents are more pressuring than peers.
Since student is not really considered an occupation, there isn’t really a lot of stress management training for students. Stress management training for other occupations come in abundance, but there are only a few directed towards students. It is generally left for the students to manage their own stresses; which sometimes work, but most times don’t.
Stress management training for students enable them to learn how to handle the various aspects of school or university life. Aspects include, but are not limited to, academics, relationships, peers, extra curricular activities, and others. Students also learn how to manage time since it is the most common problem. For instance, a student who thinks exams are too stressful is taught how to study in advance.
