Stress is a result of the reaction to overwhelming circumstances. By definition, it is the physical response to a mentally perceived threat. Yes, sometimes, immense workload can be considered threats. Whether you admit it or not, sometimes you just feel pressured to do the things asked of you to do. When the tasks given to you are more than what you can handle, you see this as a threat to your image as an employee who performs and delivers when something is asked of you.
Your body will agree with you, so it increases your blood pressure, heart rate, and pumps adrenaline so you can do something that you never thought you could do. You become more focused, more intense, more energetic, and keener on details or in making critical decisions. To sum it up, you become something more than human for a short period of time. Adrenalin isn’t permanent, though, and when it wears down, you feel that you gave it your best shot. If you found yourself still struggling, if you found yourself still facing a lot of work to do in the office, you get disappointed in yourself; what’s more, you feel tired.
This is what stress does to you. Imagine yourself in the same scenario over and over and everyday in your career. When you are constantly put in that bodily reaction, also called the flight or flight response or stress response, you keep getting tired. But that’s not all. You’ll also have a lot of headaches, literally. Stress symptoms can be sleep disturbances or loss of appetite, but can go as far as developing a heart disease because you keep on having elevated blood pressure. Your body cannot keep up with what you are doing, but it’s trying its best to provide you that adrenalin; at the cost of these side effects we know to be stress symptoms.
There are people who have these symptoms but do not realize that these are due to the stress that they are constantly in. If you are one of those few who realized that your bodily symptoms are due to stress, then maybe you should start re-evaluating your lifestyle to reduce the stress and its effects. You can’t do that until you identify the stressors though. You can learn how to do these from either online or from your personal therapist: stress management courses.
Stress management courses are training modules that help you develop the skills you need to handle the stresses in your life. While there are a variety of courses, they all start the same way. You learn what stress really is, what its symptoms are, and what possible aspects in your life can be your main stressor. After that, the stress management courses teach you all you need for coping with the circumstances.
