Stress is what happens when a person fails to keep up or cope up with the circumstances in front of them. The most common example is the employee who can’t keep up with the workload in the office. Upon receiving the workload for the day, the employee’s first instinctive reaction is rejection. He says to himself “I can’t do all this”. Yet, he accepts the workload and begins his stressful day. His body tries to keep up by releasing short spurts of adrenalin. For a time, the employee works as fast as he can.

After lunchtime, the employee starts noticing he’s getting slower. He’s losing focus, and couldn’t think straight. He begins to worry about needing to finish the job by the end of the day. If this particular scenario is repeated every single workday for an extended period of time, the stress that the employee feels leads to excessive worrying – anxiety. Stress, when left unchecked, can lead to other health problems; both physical and mental.

Stress and anxiety often go hand in hand, or anxiety results from staying too long in the fight or flight reaction, also known as the stress response. The most common way to manage your stress and anxiety levels is through relaxation and having a positive mindset. In the workplace, where most of us get the stress from, there isn’t usually anything to be positive about. What you can do at this point is to go back to basics. What do humans do when they are enthusiastic about something? If you guessed smile, then you’re right.

Sometimes, it is difficult to smile. But did you know that trying to smile can calm you down? When you smile, your facial muscles transmit nerve impulses to the part of the brain where your emotions are produced. We automatically smile when we’re happy. What we don’t realize is that smiling can somehow make us feel a little happier and more relaxed. Besides, smiling is the beginning of something better.

Laughter is the best medicine. If you find yourself really unable to smile, find something that can make you laugh. Talk to friends or colleagues about a funny topic. If you find yourself still unable to laugh, laugh on purpose and out loud. Make sure that the people around you are people you know. Otherwise, you’ll just receive glares, or the next people who approach you are carrying straitjackets.

Laughing on purpose can actually induce real laughter; especially if the people around you laugh along with you. When you laugh, you forget the stressful or anxious thoughts that you felt just a few minutes ago. Learn to smile and laugh. It is one of the best ways to fight stress and anxiety.
