Stress is most commonly found in the workplace. It can be due to the amount of workload that one is handling, the making or breaking of relationships with co-workers, being under the worst boss, the list goes on and on. The fact remains that employees say that their major stressor in life is their jobs. Stress is actually a healthy response that helps you overcome a perceived threat. In the office, the threat can be the workload that you have to do in one day or the deadline that could no longer be pushed.
When stress goes on for a longer period than necessary your body crashes and burns. While your body continues to give you the adrenalin you need to deal with the workload, there are noticeable side effects. These side effects are known to us as stress symptoms. They include, but are not limited to headaches, sleeping difficulties, loss of appetite, and loss of morale. There are even reports of women who thought they were infertile until they quit their stressful job. Others who could not take it anymore simply quit. Stress has become a major cause of turnover in a lot of companies.
Office stress relief doesn’t have to be complicated. The simplest tip to reduce the effects of stress is to breathe deeply. Remember when you let out a sigh of relief? It’s something like that. During that sigh, you inhale deeply and you instantly feel relaxed, knowing that you overcame your obstacle. For stress, breathing deeply induces that same relaxing factor as more oxygen is brought to your brain. This refreshes your mind and allows you to think more clearly about what you’re going to do next.
Other office stress relief techniques include squeezing a stress ball, playing stress relief games, or taking a break. Taking breaks allows you to turn your attention to something else. It is advisable to take breaks AWAY from your desk. Chat with co-workers. Turn the conversation into something funny. Humor can quickly make stress go away. Come back to your desk with a smile on your face and you’ll forget what it was you stressed over before you took your break.
If you’re looking for long term office stress relief methods or stress management techniques that you can do outside the office, you can start planning in advance with what you need to do in the office. Most cases of stress are due to time pressure, so it pays to have the confidence of knowing what to do for that workday.
