If you have played some stress relief games, there are tons of those wherein the player has an opportunity to just let it out on the boss. This can be fun for some people. You will see lots of “whack your boss” themed stress relief games. If you see some of your employees playing these kinds of games, you may need to re-evaluate yourself as a superior or keep a close eye on that employee since he or she may be prone to violence. Most times, bosses never want to be hated by their own team. It is even very likely that you, as a boss, do not know you are terrorizing your subordinates.

As a boss, you are subjected to more pressure than the people under you. This means you are more stressed than your subordinates, therefore you are more prone to developing undesirable characteristics that bosses are very infamous for. Being a boss, you are being pressured by your own boss (if you have one) while subconsciously blaming yourself for your team’s underperformance. The stress can add up and you may develop anger management issues – snarling at your employees that need your help.

You may unwittingly pass on the stress that you feel to your team. Ever heard of the phrase “drowning in someone else’s misery”? You may unknowingly be doing this to your subordinates. The stress transforms your personality and this may strain the relationships you have with your people. Stress has been cited as one of the major causes of employees leaving the company. This can mean two things. Either they can’t take the stressful workload, or they can’t take the stressful boss. As a boss, before you help your subordinates relax, take a look in the mirror as you may be the cause of their stress.

Office stress relief for bosses is no different from the practices of the regular employees. Taking a deep breath can help you, the boss, receive more oxygen to the brain and think more clearly so you can better organize the things you need to do. Smiling and laughing helps a lot too. If you can go over to your team’s cubicles and joke around with them, it can help relieve your stress and the stress that your subordinates will feel.

When holding meetings, you can make it as fun and as employee-driven as possible. Always make it a point to take breaks. If possible, have lunch with your employees. This helps you understand them better; making you more likely to think twice before screaming at them.
