When you hear the word “relief”, what usually comes to mind is relaxation. That’s why when we let out a sigh of relief, we breathe deeply. As we all know, breathing deeply enables us to take in more oxygen. An oxygenated brain functions optimally. Also, before we give out a sigh of relief, we do not notice it but we actually held our breath. This is what happens when we face something that we know from the start is out of our control. We forget to breathe. By not breathing, we fail to relax. When we don’t relax, we take the maximum effects of stress.
Although it’s not as effective as relaxing the moment you meet your stressor, practicing some relaxation techniques after a stressful encounter can help alleviate symptoms.
If you don’t know what these symptoms are, they include but are not limited to headaches, body pains, loss of appetite, anxiety, loss of focus, and sleeping difficulties. These symptoms can get worse. With prolonged exposure to stress and no effort to even manage it, chronic stress can cause you more damage physically and mentally. You can get heart disease. You may also develop other psychological disorders such as depression and panic disorder.
The stress response due to the fact that we felt threatened in some way. Our bodies respond by releasing adrenalin so we can keep up. Think about this: being given additional workload in the office can cause your body to go into this fight or flight mode even if workload isn’t life-threatening. You know that to be true. Yet, in the back of your mind, it is a threat to you. Your subconscious tells you that it is a threat to you in a certain way and tells your body to respond accordingly because you need it. After you get home, you feel this unexplainable feeling of exhaustion. You then feel the need to relax.
Relaxation techniques such as meditation can alleviate your stress symptoms only after they appear. There is another method for beating stress, and that is thought modification. Thought modification is the process of having to develop a mindset wherein you are optimistic about something. It is learning how not to forget to breathe when facing a stressor. But since your subconscious is in the way of your feelings too often, this technique is very difficult to master.
At this point, hypnosis relaxation methods can be of some use. Hypnosis is said to deal with the subconscious. By rewiring your subconscious, it is less in the way of you being able to stay on the positive side of things. Being under hypnosis is just like being in a meditative trance. Being in the hypnotic trance already relaxes your muscles. Since hypnotherapy involves affirmations, you get to feel better when you are wake up from your hypnosis.
